If this AI thinks it is omnipotent, can you reason with a device that can not perceive that it is ever wrong? This is the trap that the members of The Vindicators find themselves in. What or who is God? It is a hard question for a human to ponder so an AI can get trapped in a loop. The concept of the Game is not a new one, but by throwing in the concept of an AI that thinks it is God, Danny Tobey is tackling it from a different angle. Perhaps they should have taken better notice of the warning – if you win you get everything you ever wanted. This is an augmented reality game that takes place online and in the real world. When they come across an online AI that purports to be God they think it would be fun to start playing the God Game. They gather in the computer lab, do a little coding and partake in a prank or two. The members of The Vindicators are a group of outsider students who don’t really fit in with any of the other cliques. If that God can flood the world or demand you sacrifice your child, what would an AI version released onto the internet do? Just a stranger on the internet, trying to wreak our lives. What if God was one of us? Just an Artificial Intelligence like one of us. Conversely, the Mogodorians representation in the film was improved somewhat, but still left me finding them ‘camp’ more than ‘menacing.’ Again, the baddies did not feel quite so scary. Our antagonists (Mogodorians) in both the film and novel however, felt two dimensional – which left me wondering if the book was targeted towards a juvenile market. The characters had a wider scope of powers and the history of alien races is explored further throughout the text, creating interest and helping you to invest more with the lead. The book was a quick read and involved a lot more science fiction elements within the plot than it’s film counterpart. I think it did a mildly successful job, but alas, the momentum of the film crashed and burned. Hot on the heels of the ‘ Twilight’ franchise success, Touchstone Pictures/Dreamworks attempted to recreate that sensation with ‘ I Am Number Four,’ based on a science fiction series by Pittacus Lore. Despite the tough love of Aunt Vinnie, Frankie is gripped by a sense of loss. The author does a good–scratch that–great job of putting abandonment and its terrible legacy onto paper. I love the author’s sensuous descriptions of street art hidden around the city in fact, I would have enjoyed even more art. I really like Frankie’s punk-yet-vulnerable voice. He has a mission to go into the forest and meet the devil. Brown has a curiosity that “kills” his naive outlook on life and changes him until his death. Young Goodman Brown’s journey into the forest is best defined as a kind of “general, indeterminate allegory, representing man’s irrational drive to leave faith, home, and security temporarily behind, for whatever reason, and take a chance with one(more) errand onto the wilder shores of experience” (Martin). Hawthorne’s use of symbolism in his allegorical tale Young Goodman Brown causes the main character’s revelations about the sin within his community, his family and himself. It is also certain that Hawthorne’s interpretation of Brown’s “mid-life crisis” has ambiguity and leaves a reader with many different feelings about what and why certain things have happened. What is certain is that he lives and dies in pain because his belief in his righteousness isolates him from his community. Critics also debate interpretations of the main character’s consciousness is Brown awake or dreaming. Most criticism and reflection of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown centers on a good versus evil theme. |
